April Snow

Three evergreens covered with snow
Inspired by a Spring Snowstorm

We woke to over a foot of fresh snow the other morning. A smooth, thick blanket of pristine white covered the withered grass and stubborn, dingy snow patches that had been lingering in the shaded areas. Big flakes swirled through the air and clung to the pine boughs and aspen branches, like a scene from inside a snow globe. Then, suddenly, the fog lifted, revealing the bright, cobalt blue sky. The air seemd to sparkle in the sunlight.

Most of the snow from that storm has already melted, but it inspired me to pull out a photo I recently took with my phone on the edge of a ski trail at Snowmass called “Sheer Bliss." I was struck by the way the sunlight highlighted the tangled, graceful aspen branches against the dark evergreens and by the intricate designs of purple shadows on the white snow. Maybe I can capture that in a painting. The next post will follow my progress.
